receive isoniazid if their TB developed when they were young. In the present study, the resistant rate was lower for M. tuberculosis strains isolated from elderly persons than from younger adults. These fi ndings suggest that fi rst-line anti-TB medications still have good in vitro activity against M. tuberculosis strains in elderly patients. In contrast to the study by Vinnard et al. (1), our results showed that isoniazid-resistant M. tuberculosis was signifi cantly less likely to be isolated from nonrespiratory than from respiratory specimens. The reasons for this fi nding are unclear. Continuous monitoring of antimicrobial drug resistance among M. tuberculosis isolates isolated from various body sites needs to be incorporated into any TB surveillance program. Gathering data on drug resistance rates is a major aspect of the global TB control program. Clinicians must have knowledge of local epidemiology, and mycobacteriology laboratories should maintain up-to-date information on drug susceptibility test profi les of local M. tuberculosis isolates.

Synthesis of Novel Fluorene Bisamide Derivatives via Ugi Reaction and Evaluation their Biological Activity against Mycobacterium species

A series of new fluorene bisamide derivatives were synthesized through multi-component Ugi reaction and tested for their in vitro anti-mycobacterial activity. The structures of the products 5a-w were deduced from their IR, 1H NMR, and 13C NMR spectra. Elemental analyses (CHN) for novel compounds (5a, 5d, 5f, 5h, 5k, 5l, 5p, 5s, 5t, 5v, 5w) was done to. These compounds were evaluated as anti-bac...

The dynamics of male brooding, mating patterns, and sex roles in pipefishes and seahorses (family Syngnathidae).

Modern theory predicts that relative parental investment of the sexes in their young is a key factor responsible for sexual selection. Seahorses and pipefishes (family Syngnathidae) are extraordinary among fishes in their remarkable adaptations for paternal care and frequent occurrences of sex-role reversals (i.e., female-female competition for mates), offering exceptional opportunities to test...

Male pregnancy in seahorses and pipefishes (family Syngnathidae): rapid diversification of paternal brood pouch morphology inferred from a molecular phylogeny.

In contrast to the majority of vertebrate species, primary male parental care is common in fishes and encompasses a remarkable diversity of adaptations. Seahorses and pipefishes (Family Syngnathidae) exhibit some of the most specialized forms of paternal care in animals and so are ideally suited to the study of the evolution of male parental care. During mating, female syngnathids transfer eggs...

White Necrotic Tail Tips in Estuary Seahorses

White discoloration of the tail is a not seldom occurring phenomenon among seahorses kept in ornamental aquaria. In this study, three sea horses (Hippocampus kuda) presenting white patches on the distal part of the trunk and greyish-white necrotic tail tips were examined. Wet mount preparations of these lesions revealed ovoid to elongated ciliated protozoan structures. These ciliates could not ...
